Menagerie on the Mara

So many wonderful animals to see

Fun fact:  Elephants have a gestation period of 22 months and the babies nurse for 4 years.
These are olive baboons (from the color of their fur) and are very intelligent.  At one point we were trying to get a photo of a mama and baby – she saw the cameras and hid behind a bush so we couldn’t take the photo.  When we moved the jeep to a different spot, she moved around the bush so we still couldn’t see her.  We played hide-and-seek for a while until we gave up and she won the game.  🤨
Giraffes in Kenya are a different type also – these are Masai Giraffes with a different spot pattern and darker markings.
Hippos everywhere!  The Mara River cut through the savanna and the hippos would leave at night to browse, but they spent the daytime happily submerged or on the sandbars.  The pods weren’t always without conflicts – we heard them letting each other know about territorial infringement in no uncertain terms.
Striped meerkats – fun to watch, they are so inquisitive, they hustle, and are alert.
We took a sunrise hot air balloon ride one day – it wasn’t as chilly as I thought it might be, very calm.
Zebras out for breakfast.
Another pair of zebras.  The balloon stayed fairly low the morning we were out.
Grant’s Gazelle
Not sure what started this disagreement – probably over a female.
The boys just hang out together.

A lone male elephant.
Impalas grazing.

It was a fantastic trip, one that we will remember for many years.  So many new experiences, and I can’t recall a negative one among them.

Thanks for letting us share our photos with you – it has been fun!
